Awaab’s Law – Are You Ready?
In 2020, two-year-old Awaab Ishak tragically lost his life, according to the coroner ruling “as a result of a severe respiratory condition due to prolonged exposure to mould in his home environment. Action to treat and prevent the mould, was not taken.”
Currently progressing through parliament, the resulting new legislation –
Awaab’s Law – will state that social housing landlords MUST:
- Investigate and fully report on hazards within 14 days
- Complete emergency works within 24 hours
- Commence repairs to hazards posing a significant risk within 7 days
- Complete repair work within a ‘reasonable’ time period
- Offer alternative accommodation if repairs cannot be rectified
- Keep a clear record of correspondence with residents and contractors
